Considering Moving to OKC
Main Post:
from locals who currently live there, what would you say are pros and cons? I’m from smaller cities in Florida (population 250,000 only.) would you say the crime is bad since it’s larger? Is traffic really bad and congested ? I appreciate literally insight about the city! This would be a huge move for me. Thanks
Top Comment: OKC is a 'big' city without a lot of big city problems. Traffic is very manageable. Yes, we have rush hour slowdowns, snarls, etc, but anyone who's ever been to Dallas, Houston, Chicago, LA, etc know the difference. You get stuck in traffic for 15-20 mins here, that's a 'bad' day. Crime is relatively low. Yes, some places are more dangerous than others, but it's a relatively safe city. Unemployment is among the lowest of US cities, but wages are often lower, too. Good news on that is that cost of living (while rising like anywhere else) is comparatively low. Education is certainly not a 'plus', but there are good school districts around the metro. Politically, OKC is a purple city surrounded by a sea of red. I live here and I like it here, so I'm obviously biased, but while it's certainly not perfect, I think it's a nice place to live.
What's the life in OKC?
Main Post:
I'm (30 F) thinking of moving to OKC next year to give myself a fresh start. I currently live in the DFW, TX zone. I was raised in rural eastern Oklahoma as a child near Arkansas so I'm not a stranger to the state and visit that area on occasion. I've just never in my life visited or looked up much about OKC. I had a few friends move there and they love it and she recently messaged me asking if I'd be willing to take a chance to move there also bc she thinks it might be good for me regarding the mental health struggles I've been having. So I know I'd have a tiny bit of community and suppor system in OKC.
I describe myself as independent left leaning but tbh I know I'm on the blue side of things. I've looked up that OKC is pretty blue/centrist and majority of the state is red. No stranger to those facts. But I'm low-key about politics unless it comes up in conversation about something that gets discussed. Just getting that out there.
I'm a nerd when it comes to various media things. Books, anime/manga, movies/tv series, musicals, art, games, D+D, etc. On occasion I also enjoyed exploring the DFW area for cool things to do whether it be something creative, recreational, relaxed, adventurous, night life, etc. This might not even be relevant but if there's fun things to do around the spooky season (my favorite) that's just an added bonus.
Top Comment: OKC is pretty solid. The job market isn’t as good as DFW but overall is pretty good and cost of living is much lower. Find a job first and then move would be my advice.
